Quote of the day: I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves. - Anna Quindlen
I'm always interested in the way people store their books. In this case, this is the outside of a bookstore. Buyers are on the honor system and are supposed to submit 50p through the letterbox.
When Ikea was celebrating the birthday of their Billy bookcase, they presented them in unusual settings:

The books in this wall are actually ceramic (but interesting, aren't they)?

This person organized their books by color, making them part of the decorating scheme. Although I would never have thought of doing that, it does look good!

How do you organize your books and are you a bookshelves overflowing type or do you store them neatly? (I tend to organize by subject...most of the time and my shelves are a bit neater than they used to be, but only because I recently cleared them out. Soon I'll be piling books in any nook and cranny available).
Happy Reading!

We are the 'bookshelves overflowing type'. The only system we have is one bookcase for reference & non-fiction. Another for fiction. The third is STUFFED to capacity with books from when the children were little. We can't bear to part with them because of memories & the fact that children's books are so very expensive. There are also books in some of the cupboards. Generally these are the TBR next books. It's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteNon-fiction books are in a storage cupboard, organized by subject, along with a few keeper fictions I have read.
ReplyDeleteChildren's books are stored in our crawl space in boxes, waiting for them to be taken when the kids move out.
Fictions read are filed in alphabetical order by author on an open book shelf, waiting for my girlfriends to take the ones they want when we next get together, and then I'll give the rest to another girlfriend or two or three.... The books are only kept there AFTER I photocopy their covers and write down what I liked about each book, so that I can "remember" and then blog/email about them later with their authors. For example, I wrote down for COWGIRL MAKES THREE that I loved it, loved the pace, enjoyed the "tugs" back and forth with their emotions, storyline was believable, and then I wrote some other things that I would write the author privately but not blog about because it would ruin the suspense/story for someone who hasn't read the book yet. For HER MILLIONAIRE, HIS MIRACLE, I wrote down that I loved it, couldn't put it down (other than for life's necessary intrusions, then was eager to return to it), made sense every step of the way, and perfect page turner because not too long and not too short. For THE HEIR'S CONVENIENT WIFE, I wrote that the book just whipped along, it was realistic in that I could see that happening, I liked the H/h throughout the book, lots of neat little stories throughout (and gave examples that I can't say here), and I liked the funny surprise ending (again, I can't give away the story).
My TBR pile is filed in alphabetical order by author, showing their spines, inside a vertical filing cabinet, taking up all three huge drawers. Any books bought before I started to blog in June/09 are stored in photocopy paper ream boxes, piled almost to my basement ceiling, as I didn't pay attention to authors back then.
Children's books? I still have so many, and when my son brought home his college gear (since he would be living on a cot in his volunteer digs), I saw that he had THE GIVING TREE and several other childhood favorites. I'm so glad he kept them because at least one (WE WERE TIRED OF LIVING IN A HOUSE) is out of print.
ReplyDeleteElaine, you are so organized! I am in awe (and I'm thrilled that you liked the books).
