Paying It Forward - A Family Fulfills A Man's Last Wish

Aaron Collins was not a rich man, and when he passed away, his last wish was for his family to go out for pizza and give the waiter or waitress a $500 tip. And that's just what they did. They created the website AaronCollins.org to gather donations and then they passed those along to a waitress.

Since the story first aired, the response has been astounding. Heres an update.

  1. Now THAT brought tears to my eyes. I went to the update web site and read all the comments too.

Something I never "put together" was how something I have done all my adult life is a part of "paying it forward": I collect items from friends and family to donate to various organizations. Doesn't cost me anything, but the good it does is amazing. I save pop/pudding tabs (re wheelchair funds), Campbell's soup labels (re education funds), and cancelled postage stamps (for resale to collectors) for the Girl Guides; bread/milk tags for the local Legion (to reuse by church food banks); outer milk bags for churches/YMCA (so that waterproof mats can be made out of them); egg cartons (that are reused by our local food bank); and metal (to make money) for the Sea Cadets. There are other things I do automatically too (like share my baking with friends), but I never saw it in the light of "paying it forward". I think from now on I will distribute said items to friends and comment on this way of looking at it. If it inspires others to "pay it forward", so be it! Now that I think more about it, some of my friends are already doing it, by returning my empty margarine tubs along with their own empties so that I can share more goodies with more people, themselves included of course! Hmmmm. "Food for thought!"
