The Art of USB Flash Drives (and Hubs)

This little toaster USB hub has been all over the internet this week (click on the picture to go to the store):

So, I cruised over to Etsy to see what other innovative designs I could find.

There was this:

And this:

And these:

And even a number of steampunk drives, such as this one that emits a blue light when plugged in:

And a Gandalf drive made from a PEZ dispenser (there were a number of them made from PEZ dispensers):

Most of these are rather expensive, so if you're feeling handy, here's a tutorial on how to convert a PEZ dispense to a USB holder.

  1. We've got a couple of fancy 'sticks' around here. They are useless, because they are not a typical shape. They don't plug in, so they can't be used.

  2. I still use 3.5" floppies to save my work files in Word. I can store them piled up easily and out of the way.
Yes, I own USB sticks and use them for saving the bigger files (like Quick Tax and pictures), as well as the Word files every so often, but they don't pile well and are a pain to store.
IMHO, they should make something that piles/stores easily, hopefully with four flat sides. Doesn't have to be as big as a floppy.
It is also difficult to label smaller drives. I'm just sayin'....

  3. Mary, I only have the standard usb stick. Too practical and cheap to buy the fancier ones, I guess, but I do like looking at them. It never occurred to me that there would be a problem plugging them in. Good to know.

  4. Elaine, I no longer have a computer with a 3.5" drive. The last computer I had with a 3.5, the drive stopped working, so I've been using USBs for a long time (along with an external, and...I sometimes simply email files to my Yahoo account).

I'm thinking a small pencil cup would work to hold the USB sticks? (I only have a couple and they hold a lot of data, so it hasn't been a problem for me).

Also, just an FYI, if a USB stick appears to be corrupted, try reformatting it. Yes, you lose all the data and have to reload it from your hard drive, but I've been able to salvage mine that way.
